Jeff Patterson has practiced estate planning law in Oregon for over 17 years. Since receiving his LL.M. in taxation in 2010, he offers extensive expertise in advanced estate and gift tax planning, including various charitable giving strategies, advanced estate and gift tax structures, succession planning, and he has an impressive variety of trust variations. These include grantor trusts, intentionally defective grantor trusts, irrevocable life insurance trusts, education trusts, qualified personal residence trusts, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and qualified domestic trusts.
Jeff has served on the faculty of Liberty University in the Graduate Business department. He is also very active in the Central Oregon community as an advisor to several local non-profit boards, including the KIDS Center and the Guardian Group.
A native of Texas, he has adapted to the Northwest and enjoys skiing, mountain biking, CrossFit and coaching his two sons baseball and football teams.
Jeff is a Fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). Jeff also holds Music Performance degrees from the University of Houston and the Eastman School of Music. He played trumpet in the Rochester Philharmonic and several other orchestras and bands before finding a love for the law and helping families plan for their immediate and long-term futures.
Jeff serves as outside counsel for the trust and fiduciary departments of several large financial institutions. He provides advice and counsel to them in a wide variety of trust and probate administration matters, novel issues related to qualified retirement account beneficiary designation matters, and complex issues related to custodial accounts. Jeff also serves as local counsel to these institutions in Oregon court proceedings involving complex charitable trust administrations that require substantial interaction with the Oregon Department of Justice's Charitable Division.
While most of Jeff's individual clients are in Central Oregon, he is often engaged throughout the entire state by law firms, accounting firms and financial planning firms to design and implement complex estate plans with a variety of strategies.
Jeff believes in a holistic approach to serve each client and collaborates with a variety of professionals. He is well-known in the legal and financial communities for his extensive knowledge of the law, his genuine care for clients, and his ability to break down complex legal strategies into manageable and understandable elements. As such, he is frequently called upon to provide continuing education to a variety of professionals, including fellow attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, real estate professionals and business owners.
